My First 100 Mile Ultra
That was certainly an adventure.
I've run some hot races in the past, London Marathon 2018 was the hottest on record but that was only 26.2 miles in the heat. Starting at 0530 and running for 27 hours means I had the full force of the sun all day...
Having never run more than around 52 miles in one go before, this was always going to be a step up for me.
When I set out on Saturday morning I was still intending to try and get around in under 24 hours, by mile 40 I knew that was never going to happen. That was a turning point for me that probably allowed me to finish. I slowed down and walked, I rested at aid stations and stopped worrying about my pace.
To be brutally honest I don't think I trained enough. In part, due to not knowing whether or not the race would actually go ahead. I assume it wouldn't as everything else was being cancelled or postponed so didn't start a training plan until it was probably a bit too late.
I think I underestimated the effort involved. In a strange sort of way I think the heat forcing me to walk and not worry about my time probably ended up saving my race from being a complete disaster
Thank you to my fiancée Georgia & my father in law Kev for the crewing and pacing me throughout, giving me some motivation to keep going and some company for all those hours... I'm not sure I would have managed without you!
